Excellent point Dougie. Without hard evidence it's almost impossible to distinguish colors from a black and white photo. All we have are tones (shades of grey, plus black and white).
For example, U552's Red Devil insignia. The black and white photos show what tone the insignia is, but there is no way to tell what chroma of red it is. Is it an orange-red, a pink-red, insignia red? It could be any of them. Furthermore, the tone of the insignia is only relevant to the tone of the CT. Take the same dark Sawfish insignia, put it on a dark grey boat and it may look lighter in tone, which would make us think it's a lighter color. Tone is all relative and color is even more transient.
I think what Einsamer is doing is what we all do: Investigate every possible source that we can. If we find actual fact, Great! Fantastic! But if we find nothing but conflicting information, then we use our best judgement based on that information.
Paint it black, green, red, even pink if you want. As long as it's plausible and it looks good to you as the modeler.
Take Care,
Jess
