Diesel engine starting

Dear Sirs,
we know that large Diesel powerplants on ships are often started by compressed air pumped into the cylinders. We also know that a car Diesel engine is started by an electric motor.
Since the U-boats had powerful compressed air system AND also electric motors, how did they really started their Diesels? Was it possible to use both systems, each one backing the other?
