I agree with you that the electric motors that are used to turn the screws, could conceivably be used to turn over the diesel to start it. The question would be in the clutching arrangement, in that can the diesel engines be engaged to the screws, while the electric motors are also engaged, or does one need to be disengaged prior to engaging the other. Without actually having been on a U-boat I don't know, but if I ever get to Chicago I'll find out.
Alternatively if anyone out there knows if the diesels and electrics can be engaged at the same time, please let me know
