Dear Pete,
the electric motors on German and Italian subs doubled themseves as generators in order to save space AND copper since both this "commodities" were is shorth supply.
Something similar was produced in postwar years by the Dutch DAF car factory but present day engines have the starting motor AND a separated unit for generating electricity.
