I did some research into this using the many books I have collected on U-boats. Based on what little information that was found and from the information presented by others these diesel engines had air starters. This looks somewhat like and electric starter but operates off of air. It has vanes that spin attached to a shaft and gear system just like an electric starter. I don't think these engines were large enough to have a system for starting that would inject air directly into each cylinder......
