Ok Mr McDaniel, but what about the U-505 electric switch board setting? Did they were able to find AND read the operating manual or they squeezed off some direction from that captured Polish-German crewmember?
I could tell you how they could get started one Diesel with the electric motor, It'lian way:
1) Prime the Diesel;
2) Disconnect the clutch connecting the Diesel with the motor-generator (if it was the mechanical type, well, be prepared to do it once only);
3) Start the electic motor to his full power (better if you aren't moored in harbour);
4) Cross the fingers and/or touch the family jewels,
5) Cut the electic supply and immediately
6) Connect the clutch, hoping the inertia would spin the Diesel.
