Dear Sirs,
from the movie "Das Boat", whose accuracy to detail is out of question, we see they started one Diesel engine (after leaving the bottom by Gibralter) by a lever that seems an air valve, not an electric switch. Anyway, either compressed air or stored amperes could be in short supply sometimes, so a back up system would not be out of place.
