On U-505, the rudder was set properly once they were able to get into the after torpedo space, where the hand steering gear was located. That didn't require charging the batteries, it just required deciding that the hatch wasn't booby trapped and opening it so they could get at the steering gear.

Gallery credited Cdr Earl Trosino, Guadalcanal's chief engineer, with figuring out how to use the screws to recharge the batteries by towing the boat at 10 knots. Gallery never allowed the diesels to be started. He wasn't taking any chances of someone opening the wrong valve and sinking the boat. She was towed the whole way to Bermuda.
