Displacement

There seem to be three displacement figures for U-boats, the surfaced displacement which is the volume of water displaced by the surfaced U-boat, the submerged displacement, which is the volume of water displaced by the submerged U-boat and the total displacement which is the volume of water theoretically displaced by the structure of the U-boat. Total displacement is larger than submerged displacement because there are a lot of hollow areas in the structure which fill up with water when submerged.
