">Just does not appear to be logical though.<" Yes and no. Total displacement does offer a measure of the size of the U-boat. It is really not a weight, but a measure of the total volume of the U-boat. You can make a similar case about submerged displacement since the only thing added is seawater. In WWII U-boats, most, if not all, of the ballast was carried outside of the pressure hull. We are just quibbling about where the seawater goes. The actual mass of the U-boat itself is reflected in the surfaced displacement.

BTW, point of grammar. On the other board you translated "sachlich" as "neutral", close but not quite, it is "neuter" which literally means "Geschlechtslos".
