Hi SK,
As a matter of fact, the Japanese (or the Kawasaki Kobe Yard, to be exact) did even better. They invited Dr.-Ing. Hans Techel of Germaniawerft fame to design their own submarine cruiser I-1 (the Japanese had received none among the reparations). Just copying U-139 wouldn’t have done the trick as the boat needed to be tropicalized to serve in the Pacific. It’s curious to note that an early blueprint of the future I-1 drawn by Techel himself shows not two but three deck guns (two in tandem on the foredeck)!
Techel was also largely responsible for the Kaidai fast fleet submarine concept which was so popular in IJN during the pre-war period. Its prototype was I-142 (U-Kreuzer Proj.46A).
