IX D-2 vs. XB

According to Herzog, the surfaced displacement of IX D-2 was 1616 m3 vs. 1763 m3 for the XB. Submerged displacement was 1804 vs. 2177 m3 and total displacement was 2150 vs. 2710 m3. See the previous post "displacement" for definitions. It looks like the pressure hull of the XB was not all that much bigger than the IX D-2, but there was a lot of XB sticking out of the water. BTW, the XIV can also play in this league with 1688 m3 surfaced displacement, 1932 m3 submerged displacement and 2300 m3 total displacement. Some unbuilt projects for even larger U-boats were the Types XI, XV, XVI and XXIV.

The largest WWI U-boats were the "N" class (U-139-150) with a surfaced displacement of up to 2173 tons and a submerged displacement of 2789 tons (U-145-147). One ton is essentially equal to 1 m3. These were U-cruisers which even carried a 21 man prize crew. Main armament was two 15 cm guns. The Japanese apparently copied this class after WWI.
