Yes, U-Boat Captains were will aware of this black out period and trained to take full advantage of it. They made the most of it by changing depth, course and speed as this was the best time to elude the destroyers.
U-Boat Commanders we also trained in tactics in advoidance of ASDIC and also sound location and what to do if detected. The U-Boat Commander's Handbook has a whole section (Para. 246 to 270) covering this topic.
The whole trick was not being detected in the first place, remaining stealthy, there by not having to endure being depth charged. As the war went on this became increasingly difficult if not impossible to achieve by late war.
