Hi Robert,
little correction here. None of the type XXI were coated with the synthetic rubber material "Alberich". However, several type VIIc did so. One of them U1105 was called the "black panther" because of it's tower emblem. It now rests in 85' of water in the lower Potomac River just off the Chesapeake Bay. Sunk by USN tests after the war.
The coating did not loose effectiveness because of dives, but the glued rubber sheets had the tendency to peel off exposing uncovered steel to the search pulses. Rgds, RB
