Rainer:
Newport News Shipbuilding Company located in Newport News, Va installed the
first RAL (rubber/aluminum) tiles on a nuclear-powered boat.
The tiles were 5/8" thick and custom-fitted" to the pressure hull's exterior. This operation was conducted in drydock #1 under strict environment control. Large
portable "sheds" were constructed and positioned over and around the sub. A positive pressure was maintained inside the sheds, in addition to temperate control.
The surface was sand-blasted first and carefully examined for any irregularities, and ground smooth. A special primer was applied and after it dried sufficiently, the adhesive was painted on. A vacuum was created under the tile for a positive seal.
Rarely has a tile fallen off the hull, even at "all ahead flank speed."
If you remember when the USS GREENEVILLE (SSN-772) "bumped" into the
"EHIME MARU", a portion of tiles on her port side ammidships wer ripped off. The
repairs were accomplished in a drydock at Pearl Harbor.
