Gannon is just wrong in this respect. The word is TARNMATTE, translated: cloaking mat (cloth). Surely is referring to the Alberich sheets.
The adhesion problems were caused by different thermal expansion properties of the steel covered, the rubber PLUS inadequate glues available at that time. Remember the heatshield tiles falling off the space shuttle? - Essentially same problem. Rgds, RB
