Brian:

In 1944, the US Navy issued the Mk 14 electromagnetic-influence-type depth
charge. It had the same configuration as the "weighted teardrop" Mk 9 depth
charge, using 200# of TORPEX or HBX explosive. The MK 14 detonated if only the
target was within a radius of 65'.....it could be set from 30' to 1000' It's sinking rate
was from 14.5 to 22.7 feet/second, as compared to the MK 6 "ashcan's" rate of 7
feet/second, and it explode at any depth.

The efectiveness, as you state, is also dependent on the target's depth and its
hull thickness; deeper is better.

The British Navy used some depth charges containing 3,000# of TNT, to increase their effectiveness. That's some kind of big boom for a submarine to experence.

ROBERT M.
