The drawback of the DC not exploding unnecessaily is that to this day the navigational charts of Massachusetts Bay near Point Judith show areas to steer clear of due to "unexploded agnetic DCs", which were dropped by USS Moberly while huntig U-853.
About "Hellions of the Deep", the book is replete with inccuracies, I would not quote it as reference.
