The Mk 14 was activated by a magnetic exploder, therefore it detonated only when in proximity. USCGC Spencer sank a U-boat with a single 600 lb DC, but that was a freak accident.
Now, IIRC, the Mk 14 "mine" was the (in)famous FIDO acoustic torpedo, I'll have to check on it when I get home in about 3 hours,
