You are entirely correct! I don't know where I got the idea that it was magnetic. I now remember watching a US Navy training movie after WWII on the Mark 14 DC.
It was conducted by the Hollywood actor Eddie Albert. When you mentioned "doppler" it all came back to this 78-yerar old brain.
