Thanks for all responses! Marc, the site you pointed to is excellent with plenty of solid, hard data.
As for the US diesels, I would be inclined to believe the FM design to have lower sfc. If I understood Friedman´s book right, FM engine was based on Junkers´s opposed piston idea. Those Jumo diesels (Jumo 205, 207) did have quite low sfc, about 170 g/hp/h.
Rainer, according to the manbw site their designs now have an sfc of 128-132 g/hp/h. Of course, different energy content may explain something. On the other hand one gets the impression that current NOx limitations do limit possibilities of sfc reduction. One idea worth trying might be turbocompounding. Anyone knows if it´s been tried on marine engines?
