Hi Scott,
As you know 1/2mm is about a hairline thicker than your average business calling card. I suspect, the designation by the KM had more to do with some standard thicknesses of plate supply available from the steel mill rolling same, than a stipulation by the design team. I am also fairly certain, that the 18.5mm was nominal, i.e. the supplying mill had the right to deviate -/+ from this mean measurement a bit.
Am also certain, that you agree sailing these boats in '44-45 took brave men irrespective of the boat's condition. Rgds, RB
