Thermal Layers

My interest in u-boats started with Aces of the Deep. It has developed into a serious passion since!
I am not a fan of questions and comments about/on games in this area, but the question I have is only prompted by a comment by a game developer.
The comment was that the use of 'thermal layers' by u-boat Captains was a 'myth'.
It is my understanding that there was a tap in the control room to draw water from. How practical would it have been to be able to use this to determine when they went through a thermal layer?
Does anyone have any information regarding the known use or not of thermal layers?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Dion
