Some time ago someone told me that the U-BOAT engineer used a short, stubby instrument similar to a hydrometer to check the specific gravity of the sea water. I have not been able to pin this down anywhere.

Some of the fleet boats that cruised the St. Lawrence River and into the Great Lakes experienced difficulty in trimming the boat due to the specific graviity of the water, 1.000.
