I don't know for sure. I believe that they checked the specific gravity of the water (with a series of spheres of known size and varying weight, similar to the way the specific gravity of the battery water was checked?). This is what the diving officer really wanted to know. I remember hearing of some accounts of subs working near river outlets in shallow, brakish water- depth control was a bear there!
