Thanks for all the replies.
I am at a loss that the Germans would not have tried to utilised this natural occurance.
Whilst I understand it is not possible to determin how effective, big or I presume if you are still under a thermal layer, I would have thought that anything that saved a costly u-boat and the valuable crew would have been investigated, especially as it is in the reprint of the 1943 U-boat Commander Handbook it mentions about their use.
As a u-boat captain I think that I would have had the tap on all the time LOL.
I may be going out on a limb here, but it is my opinion that Donitz did not do well as an overall commander when it come to ensuring that the u-boats were competative.
The lack of a device to easily measure the water tempurature is surely a major failing.
I also make the comment on Donitz as I also would have thought that bigger batteries, deeper diving u-boats and the acoustic torpedo would/should have been implemented sooner. It just appears as if he stood by.
