Interesting indeed.
I'm not sure of the origin of the U 151/Begonia connection, but U 151 is credited with sinking the sloop in "Conway's." It's an easy jump to make if you aren't using primary source documents. And not a whole lot has been done on British warships damaged by U-boat (or otherwise) during the war, so it's very easy to miss.
At this point, what I would be interested in knowing is the typical duration of a Q-ship patrol. When could we have Begonia reasonably have been expected to have been back in port by?
Begonia could also in theory have been sunk by the other Flanders-based U-boat that went missing in September 1917, UC 21. I suppose that you could even have had an UC 18/lady Olive-type situation with bot vessels sunk, this time with no survivors. Or not -- and until the wreck of Begonia is located there's no good answer.
BTW, the Sept. 22, 1917 UB 32 sinking claim is fairly weak -- and the UKHO does not show a sub wreck in the vicinity.
U 44 torpedoed Begonia on March 29, 1916.
Best wishes,
Michael
