<HTML>our ship [ss Bulkoil ] - a tanker heading west in the atlantic , alone in 1943 unknowingly ran into a convoy heading east , it was a dark[black] nite I was on the starboard wing of the bridge when I spotted what looked like a sub 2 points on the starboard bow , I ran towards the wheelhouse shouting into the slot of our armour plating ,at the same time the wheelman was swing hard right into what looked like a torpedo coming our way, it turned to its starboard and as it did [ it was the USS Murphy a destroyer planning to ram us I would say at this time ] we rammed into her just aft of her wheelhouse cutting her into two. as the aft section came sliding down our side I heard voices ,saw someone in the water and threw a lifering towards him,ran to Port wing where the 3rd was shining a search lite at the sinking bow section. a voice out of the dark shouted cut the lite or we will shoot it out , I saw a big,big ship with nets over the side [ turned out to be the USS TEXAS ] needless to say that lite went out fast- back to split ships,the stern was towed to Brooklyn Navy yard,new bow installed and put to sea with my buddy aboard , they were with us during normandy, but missed southern invasion of France.
This week they are meeting in Baltimore- I wish them all the best. Bob
