<HTML>While Newport was already, in their snail-like manner, working on an electric torpedo, the ones that were actually fielded were a Westinghouse copy of the German design. The source for the prototypes was mainly missed shots that beached themselves on the American coast.
The acoustic designs were developed independently, to all accounts. My uncle, who was an ordinance type on a Navy B-26, mentioned that the Navy had to modify the torpedo shackles so that it would be impossible to drop two at once. Seems that if you did that, they just chased each other around in a big circle instead of finding the sub you'd dropped them on.
