The advantage of the former method was that the sonar operator was a lot more difficult to fool than the electronics of the period. This torpedo carried by the XXI would have turned around the Battle of the Atlantic in 1943.

BTW, Spinne was supposed to be a coastal defense torpedo, not a U-boat torpedo.
