<HTML>Why Not? many European films of note have been remade and \'Hollywood\'-ized for American Consumption. For a quick example : Nikita - remade as the \'Assassin\', La Cage aux Folis (sp?) - Remade as the \'Bird Cage\', Day of the Jackal - Remade as \'Day of the Jackal\', Get Carter - Remade as \'Get Carter\' etc.etc.
How would Hollywood treat \'Das Boot\' ? would Jurgen Procnow be BOX OFFICE enough for them? surely they would replace him and most of his crew with Home grown actors to get that BOX OFFICE draw. And of Course they could not be nazis heavens no! to get BOX OFFICE draw you need the audience to identify with the heroes, make them Anti-Nazi, whilst we are at it lets make them American! and move the whole local to the Pacific! it\'s much sunnier there! and of course they cannot be seen to be attacking merchantships even if historically all sides practised un-restricted submarine warfare eventually. no lets have our clean cut american men take on tojo\'s battlewagons, preferably alone and against all odds because the whole war depends on it. what about love interest? of course we need a leading lady in there! we need to cater for the Female Audience, make her a navy nurse who they rescue! and of course she falls for the captian and they have a steamy love scene. and the title, the title has no big pull for the audience \'Das Boot\' sounds like a film about wellingtons and \'The Boat\' sounds too Arthouse. Why not give it a name that says Naval yet with love interest, I know! OPERATION PETTYCOAT! I wonder if we could get tony curtis to play a cameo role?</HTML>
