<HTML>Sorry, but in it\'s US release, Das Boot made 11.5 Million dollars total. On Das Boot opening weekend, it made 68 THOUSAND dollars. Opening that same weekend, \'The Saint\" (a bad movie with a disappointing box-office) made 16 million in it\'s first weekend. Das Boot was not a box office success.
I get really tired of cheap shots about American\'s poor knowledge of foreign languages. Europeans need to remember that the US is a very large, English speaking country. Most Americans have very little exposure to foreigners. I was 18 before I meet a person whose native language was not English, and that was because I had traveled to New York City. In our day-to-day lives, we do not need to speak a foreign language and have little chance to learn or practice one. This is as opposed to Europe where a country like Switzerland can have three official languages yet is smaller than many of our states. Frankly, I like being able to go anywhere I want in my country without needing a phrase book.
Martial Arts films are a bit of the exception to the rule for dubbed films. The dubbing adds to the campiness of the film. It is standard fodder for comedians, not something for a serious film. Besides, who needs dialog to know what is happening in a karate movie.
I loved your line \"The slow pace in Das Boot is to reflect the boredome \". The same was said about the long segment in \"2001, A Space Odyssey \" where the ship it traveling to Jupiter. One critic observed that the segment really worked because he was bored.
There is little in my original post that Wolfgang Petersen would not agree with. If he had been told to shoot Das Boot as a theatrical release instead of a TV mini-series, he would have made a very different film. Most of us who love the film have the long version. View the movie edit and you will see that it is lacking quite a bit.
