<HTML>Tubes,
Thanks for the quick response. I know our youngsters riding nuc boats today are very sharp and dedicated and I don't hold it against them. I am not sure they have a real appreciation for what it was like before "their watch." And, the Irony is, we can't tell'em the really juicey stuff. I know a few got away with it in "Blind Mans Bluff" you know what I'm talking about.
Oh yah, Oil Dag MK14-3's. Shot one Oil Dag warshot at the Target Island near Maui before going to WesPac in 61. We carried a load of them and MK 27-4's to WesPac. Remember watering batteries through battery compartment hand holes and doing a "tickle test?"
XO and COB were important, however, CO set the tone they took direction from. Best I ever served with was Howard Eldridge on USS Barbel SS-580 1972-74. We did 3 back-to-back specops in WesPac in 72 while the Nucs were broke down or pulling liberty in Satahip Thailand. In 1973 we shot 117 exercise fish and one MK 16-8 warshot Op Test. The guy was a demon when it came to torpedo shooting. Got the E, and had a no error ASTOR TSI and NTPI. No Captains Masts for 18 months! Crew pride and morale was DBF showing the NUC's what a submarine was for and how it was done. Yaah, thats the way it was in those days.....</HTML>
