Good afternoon all,
Following on from recent postings concerning "Good books make good movies" I think the time is ripe for another film of the calibre of Das Boot. As far as I'm concerned, it would HAVE to be directed by 'Wolfie' himself. Lets face it, there just ISN'T anybody else, (Or is there? I look forward to any alternatives to the Maestro!!) I could not see him being persuaded to do another film from the German standpoint, however he just might be tempted into making one from the Allie's point of view. One book that had a great effect on me was Alistair McLean's HMS Ulysses. I could never figure why no one ever made it into a movie. Afterall, Ice Station Zebra ( In my view, an inferior book all round) was filmed, so why not his brilliantly written tale of the convoys. It's been a long time (about 30 years) since I read it, so I cannot comment on it's historical accuracy, but if I had to pinpoint the start of my fascination with the Battle of The Atlantic, it would be when I read HMS Ulysses. The film would not need to be the exact re-telling of the book, but if the tension and excitement of McLean's story could be re created you would be well on the way.
Any ideas ?
