Good morning Io,
Is HMS Ulysses really depressing ? Like I said in my posting, it's been a long time since I read it but I have no memory of being depressed by it, gripped, yes, depressed, I don't think so. I think I will have to read it again to see if you are right.
Didn't really mean to be over critical of Ice Station Zebra. HMS Ulysses was my first McLean and I enjoyed it so much, nothing I read of his afterwards measured up. I had the same experience with Tom Sharpe's books. For me, the well ran dry after Indecent Exposure and Riotious Assembly and the rest of his books just seemed to try too hard.
Shame on me, but I must confess to never having heard of South by Java Head. I will rectify this as soon as possible and let you know.
By the way, There is no need to call me Mister Scully, Barry will do nicely.
