<HTML>Hi again
Re your Schepke Idea, it came to me in bed (sorry I lead a boring life ) that the German warship that 'haunts' the convoy and appears at the end, just when the Ulysses seems to have got away with it and the 'cavalry' are due to arrive, could just as easily be a U-boat. The last sacrificial ramming attempt would still work as well, and they could both go down. Make a fairly spectacular climax with all the SFX techniques available to modern film makers.
That way you could justify some time spent on the interior of the U-boat as it shadows them and build up a few German characters. It would still need to come as a bit of a shock that she appears at the end to give it the necessary twist though, so she'd have to quietly disappear from the picture for say the last 30 minutes, but there's plenty happening by then anyway, as they switch course, the doctor changes ship, and characters start dying.
With a german interest to the storyline the chances of getting money for a European co-production, which was how they partially financed Das Boot, are better.
Well as its our toy, we can change what we like, though I think I hear the faint sounds of poor Al Maclean slowly turning in his grave perhaps.....
