Morning Cate,
I think we are getting somewhere. Being realistic, the only thing that would prevent such a film being made, would be the percieved lack of 'Commercial Formula' in the story. ie love interest and the ability to use box-office"movie stars"in the leading roles instead of proper actors, plus all the other ingredients these people seem to think we need before we can enjoy a film.. All of your ideas make commercial sense while retaining the integrity of the book so we are on the way. Selfishly, I would like a fair bit of uboat involvement. How about a Schepke like character stalking the convoy? Now THERE was a guy who knew his business. What do you think ? As to Ian Richardson. He has a viprous quality which I've always liked , something could definately be found for him. Re the Richard Briers play. I'm absolutely certain it was him, and he was outstanding in it . You are spot on with the Jack Hawkins comparison except Briers was more Salty. You know what I mean, duffle coat, Senior Service fags, lots of " You do as you're bloody told" in that clipped navy speak, and just to intrigue you further, I think he played a real-life character, and the play was based on an actual convoy. Some time ago I e-mailed the beeb regarding this but got no response so it sort of went on the back burner, however it's really beginning to annoy me now. I'll have to get to the .bottom of it
