Another Problem with "U-571"?

<HTML>I've watched that movie again and decided that the first 5 minutes or so are the best in the whole movie. Mainly because it so strongly resembles "Das Boot". But there's another possible problem which wasn't mentioned.
When the captain looks through the periscope at the tanker, it is located in the control room. From what I gathered, there were two periscopes on the all U-boats: one for attack, and one for scanning the horizon. The attack periscope in the VII type was located in the conning tower, while the scan perisocope was in the contorl room.
Now, is it plausible that the captain would be using the scan periscope to attack a ship? Or is it another boo-boo by the director?</HTML>
