Another "worthy of mention" flick is "SUBMARINE (D-1) of which I have a VHS copy. A B&W, 134-minute production (1937) starring George Brent as CO; Pat
O'Brian as COB (and other assignments; Wayne Morris as a cocky torpedoman
and GeorgE McHugh as a scatter-brained electrician. It has the usual Hollywood
"best man gets the girl theme" but more importantly, it is centered around submarine disasters and crew rescue.
It utilizes the submarine rescue chamber/bell that "Swede" Momsen invented, which was only used successfully on a sunken boat in 1939, when the USS
SQUALUS (SS-192) sank in 240' of water off the Isle of Shoals near Portsmouth,
NH.
