<HTML>It's the end sticking out of the water that's bigger on the search periscope. The bottom end of the attack 'scope is larger because of the hydraulic training controls and the "any height" design. If you look in the conning tower of an American sub of the same period, where both attack and search scopes were manually operated, you wouldn't be able to tell which was which unless you either already knew, or someone told you. You'd see a difference in brightness if you looked through them, though.
