This is the forum for Movie and Film discussions. Again, our topic is naval warfare in WWII for the most part.

<HTML>Cate,
We taped the mini-series version off the air a few months ago. It was dubbed in English and absurdly bowdlerized. For instance, when the officers are visiting the Weser and the captain asks whether it's true that U-Boats operate in silence, IIWO chirps, "Yes, except when someone belches!" There is a similar cleaning-up of the language throughout, and the scenes with the crabs are missing, as is Brückenwilli's "Bananentanz."
I don't know if this Sunday-school version occurs only on American TV or if it's on all the English-language programs. However, we also have the director's cut on DVD, and if you play the dubbed-in-English version AND run the subtitles, there is a hilarious discrepancy between what the guys are really saying (the subtitles are pretty close to the German original) and the spoken English. Are we supposed to be too pure to tolerate hearing, on the air, words we hear every day on the street? For DVD watchers, I recommend the German version with subtitles.
