This is the forum for Movie and Film discussions. Again, our topic is naval warfare in WWII for the most part.

<HTML>Cate,
Now you've got me violently curious: Is the paperback published by Piper Verlag, and called "Ungekürzte Taschenbuchausgabe," actually an abridged version of the book? I bought this from amazon.de about a year ago, having read the novel in English a few times and made up my mind to tackle it in the original, no matter how long it took (six weeks). I noticed immediately that the German paperback was about half again as large as the American translation, and very much enjoyed all the little word-games and long, musing passages that didn't make it into the translation. LOVE the poem about the mournful Sauerampfer on the railway embankment--it never got to see a Dampfer--which the narrator and LI extemporize in one of the "Gammelfaht" chapters, thereby totaly confusing the wooden-headed IWO.
But now you're telling us (I think) that even this is a "cut" version and there's actually a longer one out there-??? Where, o where, can I get hold of it?
Eagerly,
Meg</HTML>
