<HTML>Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,
“ungekürzt” according my dictionary PONS, Klett-Publisher, 2001, means in media-terms unabridged; an unabridged version i.e. a book; film in its uncut version. Legally speaking “ungekürzt” is a certain quality or characteristic of a certain item, here a paperback – edition of a book’s hardcover-version, where the customer of a book-shop or a buyer of such abook according to common public view, idea, or notion can expect, that not one iota is missing form the harcover- edition in reference to words used in this particular fiction or other type of books. Respectively the bookseller, knowing of this certain view of his customers grants this quality or characteristic.
Though quite a while ago I read the hard- and paperback editions and don’t recall missing anything.
As I have said on this forum before E.Topp accompanied the shooting of the film on invitation by Buchheim for three weeks at the Bavaria – Studios in Munich and told me as far as the technique of attacking and life inside the boat is concerned it was just like shown in the movie or described in the book. In E.T.’s Odyssee of a U-Boat-Commander he mentioned helping Buchheim with his book to get the technical points right in so far that commands ordered by the respective crewmembers etc, were accounted for correctly.
As to the controversy about Buchheim during WWII and after Das Boot was published I may please refer to HADLEY Count not the Dead, see book section of forum.
You all have a nice day.
Sincerely Yours
