I hope you had a lovely start in 2004.
The scene you describe is certainly impressive, maybe because it's close to a family loss.
My personal favourite is the one where Der Alte is standing in the 'Wintergarten' and a fresh-faced Werner is taking photos. Der Alte grumbles that the PK-man should take photos of incoming crews, not outbound, because the youngsters haven't grown their beards yet;"Kinderkreuzzug" he calls the whole U-boat war, and it certainly reflects the situation later on in the war.
