<HTML>Annox, you may think I'm a prig (may be you are right!) but again something to clarify about Paulus and the Uniforms of the NVA.
Paulus was "the attraction" of the Soviets and their satelites because he turned his mind during his POW-time. The funny thing is that a Paulus turned into a Saulus as he started to argue against the regime he fought for and as he came back as a witness for the russians during the trial of Nürnberg.
As far as I know Paulus was never in charge for the rebuilding of the NVA for some reasons:
1.) He returned as POW in 1953 to Germany, the NVA was officaly built in 1956, buth they started already as "Kasernierte Volkspolizei" in 1950
2.) He was simply a looser. His changes in mind and beeing responsible for the desaster of Stalingrad made it impossible to bring him back in command. He was used as a tool to argue against the militaric rebuild of western germany.
3.) Although the GDR used former officers of the Wehrmacht to rebuild the NVA (or the "Kasernierte Volkspolizei), they fired them very quick as they had done their duty.
The uniforms of the NVA (even their funny looking helmets were the "new" helmets for the Wehrmacht") beeing the same as the Wehrmacht uniforms has two reasons.
The official one: The uniforms were dresses of the prussian army, before they turned into a fascitic weapon. Also they should divert from the uniforms of the "Bundeswehr" looking too much american style. (You can aks when the Prussians had an airforce and a navy... :-) )
The non-official version: The GDR had simply the problem to get cloth for new uniforms. On the other hand they had a lot of "old uniforms" on stock.........
I have purchased a replica of an Uboat Kaleuns cap of WW II. It is very similar to an original and it is simply a cap of the NVA with the insignias of the thrid reich. A lot of replicas (also uniforms)of german clothes are mainly based of NVA dresses, because again Germany has a big stock of them! :-)
Regards
