Some U.S. fleet boat skippers in the Pacific theater attempted to
rescue some Japanese shipwrecked "survivors" by throwing them
a line, but most of the time they refused any help and swam away.
A few accepted help and were taken aboard, washed, fed and clothed by the crews. Some were put to work under constant watch and supervision until they were transferred.
