Just seen this on TV, not as good as "Das Boot", but they are not in competition and I thought excellent in its own right, very very watchable. Now, if the film has portrade the events as accurately as possible the U156 crew, and especially Hartenstein, in the midst of war, were very honourable and chivalrous indeed, but feel that you cant say that about the B24 crew, no matter what orders they received, they were on site, saw the situation, (and the information about the sub), in my opinion, should have been as honourable and chivalrous as the Germans.
I agree when someone said about the red cross, it is for specifics only, but it seems Hartenstein was doing his best to save the civilians, but to no avail. And after going back to sea and getting back to the war, it does seems sad in some way, that all hands were lost.
The fog of war eh
