Simon, thank you. As with some global publications, I thought that Der Spiegel might offer an English version of its articles. In its stead, Babelfish will do. Not quite as handy as the fictional "Universal Translator" of the Star Trek television series of the 1960's but impressive nevertheless! Gerard

VEK, thank you for the reference. When I click on the English tab, there seems to be no ability to access the article. Perhaps you can direct me? Regards, Gerard

I have found the Allied Ships hit section and can certainly do some research but would still appreciate any comments as to general or specific battleworthiness. Thanks again, Gerard

Because of their welded design and rapid construction, I assume that Liberty Ships were relatively easy to sink than other more stoutly constructed merchant ships. When reviewing the daily activity lists of sinkings, it appears that the Liberties frequently broke in two with very few torpedo hits. These ships were also prone to storm damage. Do the records here support this opinion? I tried t

In today's Events on this Day, U-218, commanded by Rupprecht Stock sunk HMS Kurd, a minesweeper. Of course, it was accomplished by a mine laid by Stock. Two months after the war, there was likely too much confusion for Stock to have known of his belated victory. I wonder then, and I have looked through the post-war section of this website without success, how many other "sinkings"

According to this site's Boats section, U-871 was sunk on September 26, 1944. However, the recorded place of sinking was near the Azores, not the North Sea. All 69 hands were lost.

My question was directed to the apparent timing of Adm. Saalwachter's capture. Was he not kidnapped after the surrender? I understand that the rule of law was significantly suspended at that time, but was there no protest by the Allies or was it open "hunting" season on influential Germans, similar to those in the missile program? What would have been the reason behind the kidnapping? Simply a matter of a high ranking naval officer? Something else?

U38 scored over 188,000 tons, mostly under the command of Heinrich Liebe, and survived through the entire war. It's last Commander was Georg Peters who was listed as having served on several uboats in WWI. At the end, U38 boat was used in a training capacity. Was it unusual to have WWI commanders take up such duty? I also see the letters EB noted in the boat's history next to its Tra

Mike, the boats were purposely numbered out of sequence so as not to give an impression of how many boats there were in the fleet by making an inference to the higher numbers. I also speculate that it also helping to camouflage which boat was newer, hence better equipped and so on. Although at the end, the electro boats all received numbers in the 4 didgits. Gerard

Generally, the Italian navy was composed of very capable and beautiful ships. They were lacking in leadership and fuel causing a potentially powerful weapon to be nearly useless. Just as the British made great efforts to destroy the French Navy once France capitulated, so too did the Germans when Italy surrendered. One of the few successful instances of a guided aerial bomb in WWII was delivered

Ian, conduct a search with u505 on this site and you will find out much regarding the crew and history. Not certain whether living crew was discussed but I would be surprised if it were otherwise. Gerard Heimann

It is simply a matter of no one wanting to have her. The French do not, I am sure. The Germans have studiously stayed away from such efforts for fear of criticism for honoring its past. The Americans have their fine speciman in U505. The British will not upkeep the one that they have displayed for years. In a previous thread, we discussed U123 and were pleased that it survived the war, served
