bY wya of answering the sceond part of the question, you should look at boats derived from Type XXI

Russian- Foxtrot and Romeo class, still used by some countries

French- Daphne, still in use

also, another interesting fact is that the current german Navy sub, the type 206, is a second-generation derivatiev of the type XXIII.
