TomW:
All Fleet boats from GATO-class through TENCH-class, had shutters that
opened when the muzzle door was opened. The first class did not have hydraulically operated breech door system, and had to be operated by hand. All later boat classes used the same hydraulic system.
The term "bow caps" is derived from the British, Australian and Canadian submarine navies. I think the German order was something
like "Offnen aubertur" (spelling?), the Americans "Open outer doors",
the French "Ouvrir les portes exterieur" and I'll pass on the Russian, Japanese and Italian orders, :-)) Perhaps other forum contributors can
ascertain if the muzzle-door shutters were opened sepatately or not on U-boats.
Cheers,
